The European Bank for Reconstructi on and Development (EBRD) was established in 1991 to promote privati sati on and market economies in eastern Europe and Central Asia. It is single largest investor in Central Europe and Central Asia. Since 2012 it began lending in the MENA region, including Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. There are expectati ons that a number of other MENA countries will join the EBRD. The EBRD’s mission is “to promote market economies that functi on well – where businesses are competiti ve, innovati on is encouraged, household incomes refl ect rising employment and producti vity, and where environmental and social conditi ons refl ect peoples’ needs.” The EBRD promotes its mission by “investi ng primarily in private sector clients whose needs cannot be fully sati sfi ed by the securiti es industry” in order to “[foster] transiti on towards open and democrati c market economies.”
