Inter-Ethnic Relations in Transcarpathian Ukraine

Today part of the independent Republic of Ukraine, Transcarpathia is located in the westernmost part of the country where the borders of Ukraine meet with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. The indigenous population of the region is constituted by East Slavs (Ukrainians and Rusyns),6 Hungarians, Romanians, Slovaks, Germans, Jews and Roma. The East Slavs (Ukrainians/Rusyns), who form the largest portion of the population in ethnic terms, have traditionally inhabited the mountains of the region where they still form the majority of the population.
