In 2007 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) approved a USD 100 million loan for health and safety improvements in ArcelorMittal’s Kazakh coal mines. This followed loans approved in 1997 by the EBRD (USD 54 million) and International Finance Corporation (USD 132.5 million) for environmental improvements at the Temirtau steelmill, which had raised concerns among local environmental organisations due to the lack of clear results and continued serious air pollution from the plant.Since 2007 CEE Bankwatch Network has supported the Center for the Introduction of New Environmentally Safe Technologies1 in its campaign for environmental improvements at the ArcelorMittal Temirtau steelmill and to ensure that the health and safety improvements promised by the EBRD loan materialise.
