Publisher: CEE Bankwatch Network
Volume: 11 pages, pdf
Description:
The Extractive Industries Review (EIR) is an independent consultative process initiated by the World Bank Group (Bank) to consider the Bank’s future role in the oil, gas and mining industries. The EIR has been tasked with: (1) identifying the negative impacts of the Bank’s extractives operations; (2) assessing whether the Bank’s activities in these sectors can advance its mandate of poverty alleviation and sustainable development; and (3) recommending whether, or under what circumstances, the Bank should continue to support extractive projects. The EIR began operations in September 2001 under the leadership of an “Eminent Person,” Dr. Emil Salim, and is now expected to release its final report in December 2003.
